53rd IUIS Council
Rio de Janeiro, 22 August 2007
Present: Gérard Chaouat, Mohamed R. Daha, Alioune Dieye, Peter Doherty,
Anna Erdei, Olivera Finn, Jorge Kalil, Stefan Kaufmann, Michelle Letarte, José
D. Lopes, Seppo Meri, Marianna M. Newkirk, Christopher R. Parish, Clelia Maria
Riera, Sergio Romagnani, Christopher E. Rudd, Reinhold E. Schmidt, Elopy
Nimele Sibanda, Kiyoshi Takatsu, Rudolf Valenta, René A. W. van Lier, Rolf M.
Zinkernagel.
1. Opening
The new president of the IUIS, Peter Doherty, welcomes all delegates to the
meeting and hopes that the coming 3 years are going to be an exciting period for
IUIS. He is very happy that the RIO ICI meeting is running smoothly and he is
especially excited about the large number of young delegates. He is looking
forward to the 14th ICI meeting which will be held in Kobe, Japan in 2010.
2. Council Members
Most of the council members of the 13th Council of IUIS have been re-elected. The
new council members are: Clelia Riera, Reinhold Schmidt and René van Lier.
Further, Stefan Kaufmann was elected as incoming vice-president. Pippa
Marrack, past president, has left the executive board of IUIS. Each of the council
members then present themselves to the audience.
3. Secretary General’s Report
The Secretary General, Mohamed Daha, has tabled his report during the 52nd
Council Meeting. He indicates that his personal assistant, Eva van der Kwast,
may be contacted next to our IUIS Central Office, Mrs. Sylvia Trittinger, for any
business concerning IUIS. In addition, he himself is always ready to advise
council members concerning any activities of the IUIS. It is expected that Sylvia
Trittinger will be leading our Central Office in Vienna until October 2007.
Thereafter, Mrs. Gerlinde Jahn is expected to be the contact person for IUIS in
Vienna.
4. Treasurer’s Report
Stefan Kaufmann, the current President of EFIS, indicates that in contrast to
earlier requests, EFIS will not require an increase of its budget proposal for 2008
(see report of the 52nd Council Meeting). Following some discussion the budget
for 2008 is accepted by the council as presented. Concerning possible additional
income for IUIS from the 13th ICI meeting, Jorge Kalil, president of this congress,
is hopeful on positive outcome but he does not expect a major positive balance.
5. Short report from Committee Chairs
Since the 52nd IUIS Council Meeting was held only a few days before, the
delegates are suggested to read the reports from the 52nd Council Meeting for
