Chedid The meeting was called to order by President A. de Weck at 9:05a.m. Minutes: The minutes of the 20th and 21st meeting of the IUIS Council were approved. President’s report: A. de Weck noted that this was in a sense an anniversary because the 2nd meeting of the IUIS Council, at which the Constitution of the IUIS was formulated, had taken place on nearby Lake Thun in 1970. de Weck noted that the 1970’s was a period when the mission of IUIS was largely directed towards gaining recognition for immunology as an independent scientific discipline. He asked that the Council consider what the Union’s role should be for the next 5-10 years. How and to what extent can the Union exercise a role of leadership in the development of the regard? What other initiatives should be considered? What role should the Union play in supporting the professionalism of immunologists where matters of certification, governmental regulations and the like impinge on it? Finally, he noted that with increasing specialization there is a centrifugal effect with more and more specialized groups being formed. What should be IUIS’ response to this phenomenon? Regardless of the specific answers to these questions, IUIS initiatives require funds. Currently, these are obtained only through fees collected from member Societies, from other organizations and private industry. He noted that other Unions have much greater resources because of income from Congresses and Journals. Should the IUIS attempt similar endeavours? He expressed the hope that in the ensuing discussions some of the answers to these inquiries would be forthcoming - 1 -
